This painting is a mandala, a meditation diagram in pictorial form. This particular mandala is a gate into a paradise garden, representing a state of higher consciousness. On this side of the gate we are in the rational linear world, as depicted by the tile mosaic. When we go beyond the opposites of light and dark we enter into the garden of life. The Earth forms the center of the mandala. It symbolizes oneness and wholeness. The koi represent duality, the water lilies multiplicity.
