This painting has many layers of symbolism. We are in a room whose floor and walls are a mountain landscape, the first light just illuminating the peak. The rest of the mountain and valley are in the dark. They represent consciousness and the shadow.
In the “valley of the shadows” stands a four-poster bed with illuminated candles atop the posts. The bed represents an altar with guardian posts in the four directions. An owl sits on the headboard representing wisdom and clear vision in the night.
Into this sacred space has entered a priestess. She has taken a globe from its holder and opened it to release the “light of the world”, the light of peace. The henna tattoo in the palm of her left hand, held in blessing gesture, is a combination of the gnostic “eight-pointed star of regeneration”, the ancient Icelandic rune “irresistibility" and the modern “peace “ sign.
The priestess posture echoes the Tibetan goddess Tara, who is generally depicted with her right foot stepping off her lotus throne as a symbol of her great readiness to help all.
The pillows contain many symbols including Taoist symbols for the “five great blessings” and the alchemical symbol for the “spiritus mundi” in combination with the astrological sign for earth. The white and red roses represent spirit and matter coming together; the “conjunction” in alchemy.
The globe, its holder and the remnants of building in the shadows under the bed represent the outmoded, linear, left-brained, mechanistic view of the world.
The Young buck at rest under the “tree of life” represents immature masculine energy at rest and the river under the bed represents the eternal flow of time.

Golden light from the sun's last rays illuminates the lotus pond. A time to pause and contemplate, a time to feed the soul, and to gather strength for the crossing. A lotus blooms nearby.
This painting is about nourishing the Sacred Feminine, the anima. A solitary woman on a plank bridge reaches out to feed the Koi approaching her through the air. As she nourishes, she is in turn nourished as well.
Koi symbolize aspiration, courage, perseverance, strength of purpose, and determination to overcome obstacles, much like salmon in the Pacific Northwest mythology. The bridge too, symbolizes the overcoming of obstacles and the ability to connect separate worlds.
The strongest Koi swims upstream to the final waterfall, where it vaults into the mist and becomes a water dragon.

One of the paintings in the Elements Series, this piece depicts Mother Earth who is sleeping beneath us, dreaming our dream, continuously giving rise to life. Her soul is in touch with the core of the planet, the building blocks of physical existence, whose fractal nature is expressed in the shape of the rock in her hand and the mountains behind her; mountains whose forms in geological time are fluid as blankets.

One of the paintings in the Elements Series, this piece depicts Fire, the catalyst energy that informs and transforms life. She is both the cosmic energy of the sun and stars and the aurora borealis, and the energy that protects us from the cold and cooks our food. The branches symbolize the storing of this energy in all growing, living things, offered by a woman deeply in communion with the element, a kind of muse or anima of the element.

One of the paintings in the Elements Series, this painting depicts Ether, or Space. The woman’s body emerges from the light emitted from the center of a spiral galaxy. This galaxy is called N-64, chosen particularly because of its resemblance to a bird nest, and its name to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, an ancient Chinese divination text from about 1000 BC.
Floating about are five convex polyhedrons that depict the solid geometrical shapes Plato associated with each of the elements. Also floating around the figure are three mitochondria, the organisms in each cell that convert food into energy, that contain their own DNA.
As the light energy rises through the chakras (energy centers along the spine) the woman’s body takes on material form. The heart chakra is depicted as a portal of crystals. Thus this painting is about the fact that our bodies, and indeed all material forms, are light energy more than solid matter.

One of the most majestic trees on Whidbey Island is this nearly 500 year old Western Red Cedar. Surrounded by a dense forest of fir, cedar and hemlock and a forest floor covered with sword ferns it is easy to enter a magical timeless realm in the presence of this giant.
Over time it has come to symbolize strength and endurance to me and I often visit it when the maze of modern life becomes difficult and confusing. It is a world axis, a place of centering and renewal.
The laugh of the pileated woodpecker reminds me not to be too attached to worldliness.

This painting is a mandala, a meditation diagram in pictorial form. This particular mandala is a gate into a paradise garden, representing a state of higher consciousness. On this side of the gate we are in the rational linear world, as depicted by the tile mosaic. When we go beyond the opposites of light and dark we enter into the garden of life. The Earth forms the center of the mandala. It symbolizes oneness and wholeness. The koi represent duality, the water lilies multiplicity.

That all things must pass and are transitory is the subject of this piece. The dance of life and death is represented by the dancing skeleton. On the wall, a raccoon and a long horn skull tell their silent story.
The clock's open door symbolizes the illusory nature of time. At its base are an open compass and the skulls of a hawk, a crow, and a small ceramic human skull. The dark folds of the tablecloth reveal the earth and the stars; a reminder that all solid matter is energy in transformation.

This watercolor painting depicts the World Tree, rising majestically in a mountain landscape. The tree represents the process of life, growing ever so slowly into maturity.
From the smallest lichens on the rocks to the tallest trees life wants to rise up, defy gravity. The water that breaks the rock down into soil streams down.
The yin/yang, up/ down energy of these interconnected processes is reflected in the composition of the painting.
