Oil painter Mark Skullerud’s landscapes embody the natural beauty of Whidbey Island and the Pacific Northwest from mountains to the Sound. Skullerud explains, “Light has been an instrument of beauty lifting me up my entire life.  And painting has been a way for me to be part of it.  Practicing the craft, as a personal experience, has been an avenue to accomplishment and control in a world that often seems out of control and beyond reach.  Beauty, mystery and discovery feature prominently in my work.  Painting gives meaning to my life.  It is my hope that the intensely personal experience of painting something never before seen will speak to the universal experience of everyone whose eyes and heart are open to the world around us.”

Mark talks about his history as an artist:

“My first job as a professional artist began in 1978 as an architectural illustrator for Walter Dorwin Teague, a national industrial design firm. Since that time my work has gone through periods that include science fiction, abstraction, myth/surrealism and impressionism.  In 1982 I opened the Skullerud Studio and began to investigate what is important to me as a painter and as a person:  light; home/place; the spirit; and the future.  This kind of exploration can only be described as following my instincts when it came to subjects that deserve attention.  I am grateful and fortunate to have had the freedom to discover where curiosity leads and to find it on a canvas to share with others.”
