For this exhibition Susan R. Lytle has painted fifteen small works that offers us a close up look at the colors, patterns, and textures of our flower relatives, revealing the incredible variety of ways in which plants appeal to our senses. Lytle’s floral paintings lead us on a journey into the inner sanctum of nature’s most beloved seducers. New also are four still life paintings of small objects found around the house that are a favorite subject of the artist.
Her close friend, poet and writer Tess Gallagher describes Susan’s work:
“I love very much the kind of space and time in Susan Lytle’s paintings. Theirs is the unstoppable time of the storybook, of the child collector, of the imagination allowed to forage and store up treasures for a special alcove where what one cannot live without is sheltered, saved, caressed and, inside the painting, can be sustained beyond this short lifetime of breaths.”
Asked about her most recent exhibition Lytle responded:
“Inspired by a reverence for nature and a strong connection to place, I have painted the natural world around me all my life. Whether it is my awe for a dark mysterious morning sky, a nostalgic homage to our dog, Zorra, or the surprise( and delight!) I feel when I look closely at a flower, it is my emotional response to a subject that compels me to paint it. Nature is such an incredible artist! In my paintings I aim to convey this mystery and magic that inspires me to take a closer look. This is what I saw and how I felt about it.”
