Timothy Haslet - “I’ve Been There!”

new neon acrylic & oil paintings

OPENING RECEPTION SATURDAY, MAY 2 FROM 5 TO 7

Timothy Haslet paints his canvases with a bright neon acrylic underpainting before proceeding to create his dramatic images in oil. Working both in the studio and at times plein-air he works a careful balance of describing enough form for recognition, yet leaving enough open for the viewer’s personal experience and interpretation, evoking a feeling that is the show’s title: “I’ve Been There!”

He states, “The colors and mediums that I use mirror the dense and saturated memory, feeling and emotion I receive with each location. With each painting, I work a careful balance of describing enough form to recognize the place, but also enough that is open to the interpretation and personal experience of the viewer. A viewer’s eyes and memories complete the piece. Sharing my paintings with others is also like sharing the location of a secret beach or site.”

The Impressionists have inspired Timothy, not only in their approach to painting and its application, but also with their supportive community. Many of his landscapes and portraits are also expressionist in nature, wherein communicating emotion through color and motion is key. The viewer’s eyes “complete” each piece.

Haslet continues: “A day isn’t complete without fresh air and moving around outdoors. There’s always something new to see and smell and feel. Like many, I get out and move about in the land in order to receive a healthy dose of perspective. Problems in life don’t seem as large or looming when confronted with such a great expanse of beach and bluff. Discovery of what is ahead of the next bend of a trail, where the unknown is welcomed and one is caught up in a sense of play and wonder. Some sites are like old friends, where reconnecting after a stretch of time is a joy. While with other sites I had often heard about and seen pictures of but had never visited, despite having lived in the Pacific Northwest all my life. Whidbey Island has been a great starting location for connecting to sites all around the Pacific Northwest.

Sometimes I visit locations on special days – I have a series of dawn and early morning paintings from reference photos of a cold and overcast early December birthday escapade. Since it was my birthday, I brought my whole family along as a gift to me! After we arrived at the first beach, among us all, there were no regrets. There is also a special stretch of West Beach on Whidbey that was a favorite place of my late father-in-law. My wife and I like to go there to remember him.”
