

One of the most majestic trees on Whidbey Island is this nearly 500 year old red cedar. Surrounded by a dense forest of fir, cedar and hemlock and a forest floor covered with sword ferns it is easy to enter a magical timeless realm in the presence of this giant.
Over time it has come to symbolize strength and endurance to me and I often visit it when the maze of modern life becomes difficult and confusing. It is a world axis, a place of centering and renewal.
The laugh of the pileated woodpecker reminds me not to be so attached.
